Scottish Duathlon Championships

Four members from the Harriers up & coming 'Multi-sport' division headed north to Stirling on Sunday for the Scottish Duathlon Championships. This is the last big race of the season & a big finale to the busy Triathlon & Duathlon calendar over the summer.

On a 'Baltic' & frosty early morning start line, Ben Ferguson was first off, making his debut appearance in this event. Ben took part in the novice sprint distance - a tricky 2 lap 5km Run, a 20km Bike & then another 5km run. Ben finished in 21st position overall & was 5th junior - all in all a sound performance in an event that takes some getting used to. Pace judgement, transitions & adhering to the various race regulations require practice in these events.

Next up was the main longer distance Championship race (10km Run, 40km Bike, 5km Run) with a high class field including a number of Pros & Elite athletes.

A great performance from in form Andy Buchanen saw two strong runs (including a 36 min 10k to start) & a good bike keep him up there with a 16th position finish in 2 hours 2 mins.

Colin Freeman bravely ignored the searing pain of tendonitis in his hip (yes I know - excuses - don't start!) to produce a 38 min 10k followed by solid performances on the bike & second run with an overall 32nd position in 2 hours 8mins. With a lot of very strong cyclists in the race us runners tend to do very well on foot but can get a bit 'whooped' on the bike, especially over the longer distances.

Genevieve Freeman battled round the same tough course completing in a sound 2hrs 30mins and was a respectable 10th female overall.

Well done to all who took part - its a tough event but, as always, hugely supported & a great atmosphere. Highly recommended!!

Photos may follow depending on what point in the race they were taken!!
