- Stephen's race was only 2 laps compared to the seniors' 3 lap race. Before the race I stated that I would scale Stephen's time up in proportion. Doing this put Stephen in 3rd place overall in the gap between Martin and Scot. This was a sufficiently big gap that even if Stephen had slowed down by more than 2 minutes on the 3rd lap, he would still have finished in 3rd place. So, Stephen gets the 3rd place points.
- Chas pulled out after 2 laps so gets the 2 points for 11th position plus the effect of the jokers.
- Eddie arrived late and missed the start so gets the point for 12th position.

Grand Prix Updated
The Grand Prix has been updated following the National. Kenny has re-established a small lead over Jim. This was a tricky one to score for a number of reasons. Here are the problems and the adjudication on the points:

Scottish Masters Indoor Championships
Martin Duthie continued his return to form at the recent Scottish Masters Indoor Championships at the Kelvin Hall. Having recently reached the 45+ age category, Martin won the M45 1500m (4:43.6) and then, on day two of the championships, won the 3000m (9:45.4). Unfortunately, Martin's full time supporter (wife) and photographer was too distracted to record the victorious Martin on film, so I am assured that the best we have is this photo of Margaret Anne's Super Veteran cat (F20 = Feline 20 year old CATegory) displaying the two gold medals.
West Highland Way Weekend
It's that time of year again when we look forward to our annual outing on the West Highland Way. For those club members who have not enjoyed previous trips, this is an excellent training opportunity to experience the delights of totally off road running over some of Scotland's most stunning scenery. This year’s run will be take place on Saturday 31st May returning to East Kilbride on Sunday 1st June. The cost of the weekend will be £50 which will include the mini bus and 1 night’s B&B with evening meal at The Ben Nevis Hotel & Leisure Club, Fort William. As places are limited, it’s 1st come 1st served with a non refundable deposit of £20 required to secure a seat on the bus. I will be at the club on our Thursday training nights to collect any names and deposits. If you are unable to get up to the club, give me a call or drop me an e-mail.

National Cross-Country Report
Jim Holmes celebrated the big FOUR OH with a pre-party race at the Scottish National Cross Country Championships at Callendar Park, Falkirk today. It wasn't an occasion for birthday cakes and candles though as the severe winds made even standing up tricky at times.
Jim and 9 other Harriers battled around 3 laps of the 4km course with 600 others in the senior men's race, well supported by an enthusiastic group of non-competing Harriers. Meanwhile, Stephen Reilly had mixed fortunes in the junior men's 8km race, twisting an ankle half way through the race but struggling on to the finish at reduced pace.
First Harrier home in the senior men's race was Stuart Gibson (44:02) followed by veterans Martin Duthie (44:36) and Scot Hill (49:30). Kenny Davidson (49:50) finished strongly and Ian Rae showed a remarkable turn of speed for an ultra-marathon runner to pick up an extra place in a sprint finish. Jim Holmes also had to sprint hard at the finish to hold his place. Next in was David Herbertson (56:11) and then steady performance of the day, Colin MacDonald, gradually overhauling Russell Couper and Chas Steven as the race progressed. Not all times are available yet so watch this space (or leave a comment with your time if I missed you at the finish).
Eddie Reid had some traffic problems en-route and missed the start of the race but was probably glad to be there supporting given his recent injury problems. Finally, it was good to see stalwart Harriers from the past, Dougie Gray (now running for Portsmouth Joggers) and Barry Cockburn there to lend their support to the event.

Round the Houses 10k- Grangemouth
The weather and the fast, flat course provided the opportunity and a good turn out of Harriers delivered the results. Ten Harriers joined a very large field competing in the 10k and young Nicola Reilly competed in the junior 2k road race.
10k PB's for Andrew Buchanan (37:49), Stephen Reilly (37:55), Scot Hill (38:29) and Stephen Phimister (41:26), all by substantial margins. Sandra Reid represented the Harriers' women, finishing in a time of 51:31. Eddie Reid (39:34 course best), Jim Holmes (40:33), Graham Lindsay (42:58), David Herbertson (42:58.5!) and Russell Couper (52:53) completed the Harriers' line up.
Further photographs from the event are located here: http://www.calderglenharriers.org.uk/gallery/grangemouth10k08/index.html

MASTERS CROSS COUNTRY ( IRVINE )
A fine day in Irvine saw 3 Harriers take on the Masters cross country which proved to be tougher than expected when sheltered from the breeze as the tempretures were above the seasonal average. Martin Duthie was 1st Harrier home in 36:34 with a fine finish next was Scot Hill with a good run 41:19 and finishing the trio was Chas Steven 54:49 well done to all.
Grand Prix - Grangemouth 10k
The next Grand Prix race is the Grangemouth Round the Houses 10km on Sunday 17th February. The 10k starts at 12:30, however, note that you must pick up your timing chip before 11:30.
The race is pre-entry only and on-line entries close today (Sunday 10th February).
To make it slightly easier to administer the jokers and so on, could you please indicate if you are definitely running by clicking on the "comments" link below this message and leaving your name (very important otherwise you just appear as "annonymous"!) and the number of jokers you wish to play. You can do this anytime through the week up to the beginning of the race. Russell and I will still take jokers on the day but it just makes it easier if you don't have to rush around looking for us before the race.

ATHelite Run In The Park 2008
Well I think we just about got away with it!! Enormous thanks to those from the club who managed to either help us out or run on the day either in the 5k or the junior 1k.
Special thanks especially to Coach who worked so hard for us in the lead up to the race as well as on the day - it seems the man will go to the ends of the earth in exchange for a handful of Tunnocks Wafers!
The horrendous weather prior to race day forced an 11th hour route change for the junior 1k which pushed us to the limit but lots of smiling faces at the end & a good turnout from the Harriers junior section.
We believe there were about 50 runners out of the 75 pre-entered.
The 5k followed the same testing route as last year & the trails held up well despite the previous rain & the Rangers had managed to clear all the fallen trees from the weeks high winds.
168 finishers out of the 225 entered - not bad considering the weather.
Results can be found below via Coaches entry - basically Ronhill Cambuslang cleaned up the Mens results & Motherwell AC took nearly all the Female prizes!
Thank you so much once again to those who helped - it could not happen without you!
Photos will be posted shortly at www.ATHelite.net when our NEW website is launched in the next couple of days.

Rothesay Weekend
This year’s Calderglen Harriers’ winter ‘social weekend away’ visited Rothesay on the Isle of Bute for the first time, after a couple of previous years at Tarbet.
The combined obstacles of forecast extreme winter weather and industrial action by Rothesay pier staff on the Friday were overcome, by taking an alternative route via Dunoon and Colintraive, with all Harriers arriving safely at the Glenburn Hotel by early evening.
After a very pleasant evening in the hotel, Saturday morning broke with a few inches of snow across the island, right down to the water’s edge. Undeterred, the main Saturday run went ahead as planned, following a circular route which took in part of the ‘West Island Way’ before returning up the east coast of the island and finishing with a sharp climb up Canada and back to the hotel via the Bogany Woods - approximately 10 miles.
An excellent lunch at the Ettrick Bay Café was followed later in the afternoon by the inaugural Harriers Rothesay Promenade Handicap Team Pursuit, where the silverware was won by the team comprising of Russell, Francis, Gerry and Graham over the 1.6 mile course.
For many, the highlight of the weekend was the Saturday evening entertainment from the Beatles tribute band ‘Just John and Paul’. The Harriers ‘sixties’ fancy dress was well appreciated by the band and the other hotel residents.
Sunday brought further excitement – a power cut on the entire island, and then the cancellation of the ferry until early afternoon due to the gale force winds. However, everyone made it back safely to the mainland at Wemyss Bay in the daylight before heading back in East Kilbride.
A big thanks to Scott Hill who organised the weekend and kept everything on track through the various challenges over the weekend…

ATHelite 5k Results
Another fantastic turn out on the morning of Sunday 3rd February, despite very blustery weather conditions. Stephen Whyllie won in a new course record of 17:08. Harriers Ben Ferguson (2nd Junior) and Stephen Phimister both had excellent runs. 168 took part in the 5k, and around 50 children in the 1k.
