National Road Relay Teams

The teams for this Sunday are listed here.

The ladies and M50 compete over 4 legs whereas the senior and M40 men compete over 6 legs. We therefore have two spare places in the senior men's team. If any of the male reserves listed in Russell's previous post are able to run, then please let us know asap.

The legs alternate between approximately 3 and 5.8 miles. Legs 1, 3 and 5 are the short legs whereas the even numbered legs are the long legs. Once we declare the running order, we have to stick to that. Therefore, if you have to drop out then let us know as soon as possible. The race starts at 1200 (men and women together).

WEST HIGHLAND WAY RELAY

Its approaching that time of year when we do our relay run up the West Highland Way.
This will be on Sat/Sun 27th & 28th May.
It will be the usual format of, we have a 17 seater minibus and have reserved 20 places in the Ben Nevis hotel on the Sat night for dinner, bed and breakfast.
Pick up times for the Saturday will be briefed nearer the time but is likely to be about 4am.
As you will see we have more hotel spaces than seats on the bus in case anyone wishes to drive as has happened in the past.
For those new to the club each person will get a section of the West Highland way to run and may be joined by others. Also you may if you wish run with others on their section.
The cost for the bus and hotel is £65 and a deposit of £20 is due to reserve your place. Frances will be taking this from Monday at training. Balance will be due 2 weeks prior to the event. First come first served.

ALLOA HALF MARATHON

Well the weather gods where kind today. After forecasts earlier in the week predicting awful weather it turned out not bad. Some old faces and some new representing the Harriers over the distance. The 1st Harrier home was Andrew J Buchanan in 1.28.24 which is excellent when you consider that Alloa isn't exactly flat and we had a headwind for the 4 mile straight along the foothills. Our female contingent were next with Julie Beveridge 1.31.20, Kay Conneff 1.40.30 and a new PB followed by Karen Allen in 1.43.46. Back to the men and Paul Rooney finished in 1.44.10. Some of the new Ladies in the club next both running fantastic times, Kirsty Wilson 1.48.26 and Sharon Gregg 1.49.41. That only left myself out there and it was going to be a while as I was still struggling with the cold virus. Had ran well enough up to 5 miles then suddenly there was nothing left and lost about 90 secs in the next mile and never recovered. Bit of advice, Probably not best to run off a stinking cold. Onto how the day was run. The organisers for the last few years have been increasing the numbers at this event which brings with it some new problems. The first 1.4 miles is looped round a narrow street with speed bumps. Not good in massive crowd but I think everyone got away with it. The course then moves east for a bit before turning North and the climbs between 2 and 4 miles and the grateful water station at 3.2. It was very warm out there when your running. After 4 you get the long descent to Tillicoutry and 6 miles. Now for the 4 mile straight a long road which takes you through Alva and onto Menstrie. 2nd water station just as you leave Tillicoutry gratefully received. Unfortunately that was the last of the water for me as the next 2 and the finish had ran out by the time I got to them (not happy about that). I also found out later the 1st 2 stations ran out before all the runners where through. Anyway back to the run When you turn off the road at menstrie you have about 0.5 mile flat before the big hill into Tullibuddy (I keep forgetting its a killer). This leaves a short straight through Tullibuddy till the left turn at 11 miles back to Alloa. Another long climb but not as steep as the last one. This bring you into Alloa at the old start/finish (wished I was at the finish at this point). One more mile and a bit to go and its slightly downhill and flat. Recovered a little bit of pace here but still heavy legged. Last left turn and 100 metres to the finish. Straight to the car for a drink that was sorely needed. Looked at the watch 2.18.33. Not my best run but it was probably good practice for London as that's probably how I will feel in the latter stages there. Nice to know I can put up with such discomfort. Well done to all who ran today. Many thanks to Lorraine and Julie cheering us on and anybody else out there as I heard a few shouts but don't know who they came from.

Exclusive!

This article appears in the Herald this morning:
" There were dramatic scenes yesterday at the international athletics meeting in Falesia, Algarve when the winners were announced of the 5 kilometer road race held on Tuesday the 14 March. In a highly competitive field of the highest class of European runners,  the winner of the men's 55 category was announced as Kenny 'Cheeky Monkey' Leinster from Scotland. Kenny was unable to collect his prize as he had already jetted off to take part in another race in his native Scotland.  The prize was collected by Nick Anderson,  Kenny's coach, who said his boy was a natural at the marathon but since winning this shorter race had now shown his pedigree at this shorter distance too.
Alan Derrick, the Scottish Trail Champion and sometime coach of the champion said this was a great result for Scottish running but didn't think his position as Scottish running guru was at threat. Eddie Reid, a veteran of Falesia, was quoted as saying ' I will put the monkey  back in its cage' , taken as a reference to the longstanding competition between the two racers.
Fran Ferguson, winner of the Scottish Masters Grand Prix made reference to the woman's F55 winner Ann Evans " a nippy wee thing"  coming from Wales and described this as a 'Celtic takeover'.
From our athletics correspondent.

Stop Press - also in the prizes, Frances Ferguson was delighted to win the F50 category in the 5k, having adapted well to the intense training, recovery and nutrition regime imposed on the training camp. Not to be left out, Eddie Reid was also in the prizes, winning a war of attrition in the post-prize giving BBQ pool competition.

25TH ANNIVERSARY ROUKEN GLEN 10K

Dear Hugh

It’s an exciting year for our club Giffnock North as we host our 25th Anniversary 10K in Rouken Glen Park in June this year.

I’m writing to you in the hope that you will promote this significant milestone to your members.

The Rouken Glen 10K is a challenging route but in a beautiful park, and the last 2 years have seen clear blue skies and sun! Apparently it’s to be the same this year...

Traditionally we have not seen a lot of club runners in the race hence why I am getting in touch. We would be delighted to welcome some of your members this year to help mark this occasion with us.

Runners will benefit from a reduced anniversary price of £10 for Scottish Athletics Members, £12 for non, and one of our well regarded technical T-shirts. We will also have two water stations, two more than many club 10Ks.

Runners can enter through ‘entry central’ and keep up to date with the event on our Facebook Page ‘Giffnock North Festival of Running 2017’ which also includes details of how to enter.

Delighted to chat it through, my mobile number is below.

Many thanks for your consideration.

GREAT SCOTTISH RUN HALF MARATHON 2017

Most of us in the club will be aware that the 2016 Great Scottish Run Half Marathon was measured short.  Due to this error the race organisers Great Run have offered a 50% discount to half marathon finishers only.

I assume like everyone else I received an email from them on 14th February advising me of this position.  The discount is only applicable to entries into the 2017 half marathon and cannot be transferred to an alternative year or event.

If anyone has entered the 2017 half marathon before this offer was issued will be issued a 50% refund by Wednesday 22nd February.

The discount will be available until Tuesday 14th March.

LOOKING FOR RUNNERS FOR UPCOMING FILM PROJECT!

Hi there

Im writing from The Edge Picture Company. We are looking to film runners for an upcoming project we are working on. We are looking for 2 runners, a female and a male, around 30 years old that will be free one day early next week for a day’s shoot; we are currently looking at filming Tuesday 14th.
At this stage we are looking into filming in the Glencoe area with a local director/cameraman and the shoot is likely to be quite a long day from 7-7 but we would be paying £300 per person for your time. We may, to make life easier for everyone, decide to put everyone up in a local hotel the night before (evening of Monday 13th), if this is the case we will be paying for the hotel, evening meal and all meals the following day whilst your on set with us.
Are you able to kindly pass this along to see if anyone will be interested in taking part or know of anyone who will be up for it?
If anyone would like further details, please kindly email me or call back!
Thank you!
Kind regards,
Angelina Pekova

DOWN BY THE RIVER 10K

Fifteen senior harriers made there way to Cambuslang for the 10k Down by the river race. There were several kids doing the 3k race too but no results available for that yet.
It was a warmish day and felt really warm when the sun was on you. After various warm ups we were ready for the off. Pre race briefing done and we were away. A 2.5k loop round the industrial estate offers good flat running to allow you to settle into a good steady pace before some of the undulations on the out and back part of the riverside path. These are only gentle undulations so allow for some fast running. This part of the course also allows you to see at the turning point how far you are in front or behind others and also gave me the chance to see how well the other Harriers are performing and performing they where. First Harrier I seen on the return was Andrew Buchanan going at a really good pace and not a million miles off the lead finishing in a new PB of 36.46. Next was Jim Holmes and Martin Howell coming to the finish line neck and neck with Jim just coming out on top 43.15 and 43.16 respectively. Good to see Martin out racing again and posting a good time. Another returning to some good form next was Stuart Waugh finishing in 44.15. Results went a bit dodgy after this but ive been able to extrapolate the following from Kenny Philips photos and others declared times.
Next in and continuing on his superb season was Richard Lawton in a new PB of 45.08 made all the better with the fact Richard ran from East Kilbride and back again later completing over 17miles with a 10k PB in the middle. Our first lady came in next Kay Conneff but for the second week in a row is not on the results but should be on the finalised results 45.12. Second lady next in was Frances Ferguson and returning to some previous form with a time of 45.54. Back to the men now and also continuing an increase in form was Gordon McInally finishing in 46.38. Another who hasn't been able to race much but posting a great time was John Boyd in 48.51. Russell Couper next with a good time aided from increased milage in 54.33. I had a fast first 5k but lost about 2mins in the second 5k and was getting reeled in by Julie Thomson who finished third Harrier lady in a time of 54.54. Not far behind running her debut was Holly Rankin finishing superbly in 55.56. Next in was Sandy Hayden who the day before had run over Conic hill. Not ideal preparation for a 10k race finishing in 57.05.
Finally returning from injury was Lorraine Buchanan finishing well in 61.59.
Many thanks to all that came out to support us today. Too many to mention as I'm sure I would miss some so thanks to all you know who you are.
