Donkey Brae 7 Mile Multi-Terrain Race

Calderglen Harriers enjoyed yet another day at the Donkey Brae 7 mile race on Sunday. The event was part of the Aberdour Festival which added to the atmosphere at the start and finish line, with plenty of stalls to wander around before the start of the race. The warm summer weather provided perfect conditions for the Harriers' sun bathers Irene Hill, Caroline Lindsay and Alison Searil, who occasionally put some effort into clapping and cheering in between sipping their Pimm’s. The weather though was too hot for the runners who suffered in the blistering heat, making PB’s difficult on an already tough course with several large hills. This showed as the runners crossed the finish line, and they all were suffering from dehydration, although there were multiple water stations lined up around the course. The first Harrier to cross was the ever improving Stuart Gibson in a time of 40 minutes and 11 seconds. To add to this achievement Stuart also took second prize. Next to cross the line, collecting the prize for third veteran was Scot Hill in a PB of 44:05 followed by 17 year old Stephen Reilly with another PB of 44:43. Eddie Reid also ran an excellent time of 45:27.A newcomer to the course, Graham Lindsay’s performance was first rate, finishing in 50 minutes and 48 seconds. Colin Banks debut to the course produced great time of 55:25 while Sandra Reid enjoyed a great time of 57:39. Claire Brady in one of her first runs for the Harriers produced a time of 59:16 and not forgetting the ever present David Searil who finished in 60:49. To keep with tradition, the day was capped off with a swim in the nearby Silver Sands Beach (see picture above)...... Report by Stephen Reilly.

The Track is Back!

Due to popular demand (at least two requests!) the Wednesday night track sessions have been re-introduced after an absence of over a year. We aim to build the sessions from now through to the Winter. The sessions will focus on a different aspect of training than our road sessions and are complementary to rather than a substitute for the reps sessions we do on Mondays and Thursdays. As with all training, the benefits only come after months of gradual progression, so hope to see you there on a regular basis. The sessions are at the John Wright every Wednesday starting at 6:30pm. Meet in the corridor leading out to the track changed and ready to go.

Tour of Clydeside 2008

Final details of this year's Tour are now available. The event consists of 4 evening events in one week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), the first event taking place on Monday 4th August at 7:15pm. The events are:

Monday - 5.5 mile Trail Race at Kilbarchan
Wednesday - 3 mile Canal Bank Race at Clydebank
Thursday - 5km Multi-Terrain Race at Dawsholm Park, Glasgow
Friday - 10k Road Race at Cartha QP Rugby Club, Pollok Park.

A few of us have done the event in previous years (when it was tough- 5 events in 5 nights!) and found it to be a real physical and tactical challenge. So come on, give it a go.

Crieff 10k 2008

Six Harriers travelled north for the Crieff 10k trail race on Sunday 13th July. This has been a regular summer fixture for the Harriers for several years now and is clearly an enjoyable experience despite the tough course.

First Harrier home was Eddie Reid (41:44) ahead of a closely fought race between Stuart Waugh (43:07) and Stephen Phimister (43:11). George Stewart (44:02) was next of the men. Frances Maxwell had an excellent run (46:08) to finish 5th lady overall and to pick up the veteran prize. David Searil (51:08) completed the Harriers' line up.

If anyone has a nice photo from the event to accompany this blog article, then please e-mail it to me and I will add it in. In the meantime, here is a link to a website containing photos of the event:

Grand Prix 2008 Results

Congratulations to Frances Maxwell and Jim Holmes on winning the Calderglen Harriers Grand Prix series for 2008. Despite being plauged with injuries through the year, Frances still managed to string together a series of 10 out of the 16 races. Sandra Reid made a late start to her first year in the Grand Prix to finish second, just ahead of Mary Goldsmith.

The men's competition went down to the last race where Jim Holmes took the title away from long term leader Kenny Davidson. The task was made slightly easier by the fact that Kenny was on holiday. However, this was Jim's 4th Grand Prix title making him the "winniest" person in Calderglen Grand Prix history. A late charge from rapidly improving David Herbertson brought him up to 3rd position. In the juniors, Ben Ferguson was again victorious. Use the Grand Prix link in the side menu to see the full results of the men and women's Grand Prix.

Vertical Mile Times

We had probably the biggest field ever for the Vertical Mile and the closest finishes in both the men's and lady's races. The winners were Ian Hughes and Frances Maxwell. Full results here:
