Brampton 2008

Saturday 15th November will see the Harriers head south for the Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile road race, the highlight of the Harriers' racing programme every year since the club was formed. As is usual, we have hired a bus to take us down and bookings for places on the bus are now being taken on a first come (with money!) first served basis. If you entered last year then you should have received an entry form through the post but you can also download one from the link below.

http://www.calderglenharriers.org.uk/Brampton2008Entry.pdf

Please complete the form and hand it to Chas or Russell together with a cheque (or cash) for £20 made out to Calderglen Harriers. This covers the race entry (we get a 10% group discount if we submit them all together) and the bus. We will stop for dinner in Moffat on the way back and then return to the Sports Club. Travelling supporters are very welcome (£11.50 for the bus). Contact Chas or Russell for further details.

Harrier Sets PB against Beijing Olympian!

Stuart Gibson was the sole Harrier at the Scottish Athletics Senior Track Championships at Pitreavie today. Stuart lined up in the 5000m against a quality field including Olympic steeplechaser Andew Lemoncello and two of Shettleston Harriers' contingent of Eritrean athletes. Despite blowing up following the hot early pace, Stuart still managed a PB of 16:13 finishing in 12th place. A much better time is certain to come in a more even paced race. The race was won by Andrew Lemoncello in the excellent time of 14:11 followed by Tsegezab Woldemichael (14:15) and Tewoldeberhan Mengisteab (14:28).

Paisley 10K

Two Harriers turned up to race at the Paisley 10K today, and both managed to produce amazing times. First of all the ever improving Andy Buchanan smashed his previous PB by over a minute in a time of 34 minutes and 38 seconds, finishing in 10th place over all.
A course best for Jamie McMonagle also meant his fastest 10K time in 5 years. Crossing the line in 36 minutes and 22 seconds, Jamie finished in 26th position in a field of over 600.
A good finish to the month for both Harriers.

August Races

Over the last month the club has taken part in a number of races. The first of which was on the 6th of August, when Stuart Gibson took part in the Dundonald 10k, shortened from 10.5K due to a flooded football pitch at the start. This did not effect Stuart as he finished 2nd in a time of 34:07. Two weeks later, Stuart was racing again, this time in the Irvine 10K, in which he improved his time to run a fantastic PB of 33:45.
On the 23rd of August, Scot Hill made the perilous journey to Rothesay, to compete in the Bute 10K, just one of the events involved in the Bute Highland Games. The strong winds made good times difficult, but he still managed to finish in a time 38:59.
On the same day as the Bute 10K, a number of Harriers turned out for the St. Andrew's Hospice 10K. First Harrier over the line was Stephen Phimister in a superb time of 40:20. It won't be long until he breaks that 40 minute barrier. David Tait was not far behind in 41:34. Next to finish was William Bell, who'll be delighted with his time of 46:19 as will John McBride who ran an excellent 47:30 and not forgetting Richard Lawton who completed the tough course in 50 minutes and 50 seconds.
On the 24th, Kenny Davidson who recenty moved to Peebles, took part in his first race in a Moorfoot Runners vest, the Teviotdale 10K. Windy conditions made running difficult over this two lap course but he ran a time of 39.29, which is a great time for someone who hasn't raced in months.
Well done to all who raced in the last month and good luck to those who will race in months to come.

Chatelherault Final Fling

Just a note to confirm that last night, 18th August, was the last Chatelherault session of this year; darkness having defeated us. Another fantastic turnout last night at what is obviously a very popular session.

All the times recorded so far are on the link below and if you have not already advised us of your time from last night or any of the previous sessions, then please leave a comment.

British Masters Cross Country Relays

Following on from our men's M40 and women's F35 team performances (2nd and 4th respectively) in last year's British Masters Cross Country Relay championships at Bathgate, it would do the club's profile no harm to go back and put not only the club name but also Scottish clubs in general onto the results sheet in the 2008 event. This is being held at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire on Saturday 4th October.

I propose that we enter an M40 (6 x 4km) and an F35 (3 x 4km) team, as last year, this giving us the optimum pool of men and lady runners to choose from (note there is no upper age limit for the teams). There are many runners in the club who have improved or maintained an excellent level of performance over the last year and I would hope that this is something to which you would all give serious consideration.

A pool of names for each team has to be entered by 21st September. The only fair way to pick the final teams that would travel south is to take a race as a trial, most likely the Houston Relays as this is only one week before the event. The fastest 6 men and 3 women (plus one reserve for each team) would be selected (assuming they are available).

Please all let me know your availability either via a comment on the blog, by e-mail or just speak to me at the club. We would probably hire a minibus and drive down on the Friday evening, B+B it local to the race, coming back up on Saturday evening.

Ra Tour!

As if one race per week was not enough, Stephen Phimister did the Harriers proud at the gruelling Tour of Clydeside this week, competing in four races in the course of 5 days. This requires not only fitness but a bit of tactical common sense because pace judgement is critical if you are to complete the week.

The first event was on Monday evening, a 5.4 mile (Stephen ran all the races with his Garmin GPS device on, so no doubt about the distances!) trail race at Kilbarchan. The warm conditions made it tough going and Stephen finished in 35:39, struggling in the second half but finishing 13th.

Tuesday was a rest day but on Wednesday the event moved on to Clydebank for a 2.7 mile canal bank race. The wind and rain were more to Stephen's liking and he ran a well paced 16:50 to bring him up to 11th in the overall standings.

Back to the trails on Thursday for a 5.05km multi-terrain race at Dawsholm Park in Glasgow on an undulating muddy trail very similar to our own Calderglen. The conditions were again to Stephen's liking and he gained another position in the series moving up to 10th overall in a time of 21:33.

The final event was the longest, a 10k road race (actually slightly longer than 10k according to the Garmin) around Pollok Park. With no need to hold back, Stephen posted a time of 40:13, an amazing improvement of 1:19 on his pb. This was enough to maintain his 10th position overall in the series and just goes to show how hard training and racing can bring you to a peak. Surely it will not be long before he breaks the 40 minute barrier.

Auldhouse 5k Time Trial - August 7th

A great turnout tonight in good, windless conditions. Many continued their steady improvement in time or at least came to within a matter of seconds of their previous best times, so well done to all for keeping the effort going. Fastest time of the day and the new season record went to Andy Buchanan in 16:50. Fastest lady was Dawn Buchanan (25:03), fastest youth was Ewan Murray (20:14), fastest junior was Stephen Reilly (19:00) and fastest vet was Charlie MacDougall (18:08). All the times are here:

Helensburgh Half Marathon

A few of the Harriers made the early journey down to Helensburgh to take part in the half marathon, which promised good times for everyone with it’s flat course. The rain seemed to be holding off but as the first mile was reached the heavens opened and everyone appeared to be running through a wall of water.

These tough conditions had little effect on Andrew Buchanan who crossed the line in a fantastic PB of 1:19:08. Gerry McParland, taking part in his last senior race, had another great time of 1:22:11 while Scot Hill took over a minute off his previous PB to finish in 1:24:15. Stephen Reilly’s time of 1:25:22 showed another fine performance for a junior in half marathon. David Herbison’s race times continued to drop as he completed the course in 1:32:48 (still to be confirmed), yet another PB.

Unfortunately, Stuart Waugh had to pull out of the race, due to a back injury, at about 10 mile.

One of the plus sides of the race was the free swim in the nearby pool that every runner was entitled to, which everyone took advantage of. Thanks to all who supported the runners and endured the rain to cheer everyone on.
