The Grand Prix kicks off tomorrow with the George Cummings Road Relays at Houston as detailed in a separate blog post. I have given Russell a list of the starting jokers for the men, noting that the women start on 1 joker each with a theoretical season maximum of 32 (depending on whether the women's grand prix takes off in terms of participation this year, which it should, next year the women will move to the same joker format as the men). There are further changes to the joker rules applying to both the women and men as follows:
There is a slight change in rules to avoid the situation where anyone feels compelled to run when injured or ill just to get to that 15 races = 2 extra jokers situation which was introduced a number of years ago. This is not what the "best 11 from 16" scoring system is supposed to promote (it is supposed to give you the freedom to miss some races if ill or injured and still be in with a shout). Therefore, the new situation is:
- 1 extra joker after 5 races (as now)
- 1 extra joker after 8 races (new)
- 2 extra jokers after 11 races (new)
- normal joker rules after from 12 races to 16 races.
Unfortunately, due to an injury and work commitments, I won't be able to attend Houston tomorrow, so best of luck to all. Its a great start to the season.
Alan
