Devils Burden Relay

The date of this event has changed to Saturday 9th February and no longer clashes with the vets relay weekend. Therefore, please add your name using the links below if you can now make it. If this change of date means you cannot now do it, then please also use the form to create a new entry and write a comment in the "additional information" section of the form.

A possible new adventure for the club, the Devil's Burden Hill Relay takes place on Saturday 26th January 2013. Kenny Leinster is a veteran of this event and with his recommendation, we would like to get some teams entered. The event comprises teams of 6 but is in fact a 4 stage relay as some of the legs require runners to run in pairs for safety. This is a full-on, Winter hill race in Scotland so there are compulsory equipment requirements for safety. Full details of the event are here on the Scottish Hill Racing web site. Kenny is going to take us on a recce a few weeks before the race and after that we will have a better idea of who is suited to which legs. The more teams the merrier as always.

Please leave your name on this form if you are interested and speak to Kenny if you want some advice on the event. Names received so far are here.

(I should point out that this event is on the Saturday, the day before the vets relays at Strathclyde Park. We have more than enough members of the veteran and non-veteran varieties to be well represented at both events! See the comments to this post for further views on this).

Does this mean we will not be taking part in the vets relays at Strathclyde park?

Hi Scot,
No, it does not mean that. Given that the two events are not on the same day and given the age profile of the club, we are more than capable of supporting both events. I would emphasise that the Devils Burden is a relatively extreme event, particularly given the time of year, and will not suit many in the club who have not done hill races before. Indeed, there is a requirement to carry and to be able to use an OS map and compass as some of the check points are un-manned. It would be good to see some of our non-vet members doing the event though. I would also hope that our M50 vets in particular could turn out in force for the vets relay as we must be in with a chance of a medal this year.

That's good as I've got everything crossed I'm running again for the Vets relay and (Pub Run?). I think I'll pass on the Devils Burden as my target for 1st race back? I could only remember the Vets race was at the end of January, that's why I asked.

I suggested running this as an additional race which offers an opportunity for us to do something a bit different. There is no intention to interfere with regular races which members may already have in their calendar.

This is one race I was also interested in doing but obviously need to be in a team to do it. Looking at previous results for the race there are runners of all standards taking part with slower teams starting one hour earlier. It's unfortunate its the same weekend as other races but I am afraid this happens a lot. Last weeks Brampton coincided with the Lanarkshite XC. Anyway as in all races no one is under any duress to take part. Like everyone in the club we all wish Scot well in is comeback. As Alan D says the more Harriers we have at all races the better it is for the club.

I have just checked with the organiser at Fife AC. The entries are not yet out and will close at the end of January. I still think we should go for a recce around mid january as this will let everyone get a feel for the course.

Totally agree with Kenny. In fact the change of date suits me better and I reckon the club as well as it gives us more time to get ourselves organised for the event.

Alan,
can you post a blog from me suggesting that those who are interested in going for a pre race recce of the Devils Burdens get together on Saturday the 12th for a trip through to Fife. It is likely to be a whole day as we will be covering about 16 miles. I suggest that those who can come wear hill running shoes and carry a small rucksac with spare clothes and some food and a hot drink. I will organise maps and would be happy to lead the trip.
